Getting to Yes at DDES: The Residential Building Permit Process Workshop New
Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 8:30 a.m. - Noon
Location: DDES Hearing Room, 900 Oakesdale Avenue SW, Renton, WA (see directions)
Cost: Free. We've had a great response and the workshop is now full. No new registrations or wait list requests are being taken at this time.
DDES is offering this workshop to first-time permit applicants and industry professionals who intend to build one or more single family homes in unincorporated King County.
Workshop objectives
The purpose of the workshop is to examine the various permit application review stations involved with single family construction and to outline technical requirements and project management strategies for completing the permit application review process as quickly and efficiently as possible.
This workshop provides an opportunity to
- learn about the various review stations within the King County process for residential permit application review.
- learn how to organize your proposed project and application materials in a way that takes you through the permit application review phase as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Who should attend the Residential Building Permit Process workshop?
Anyone who is planning to be or currently is involved in residential construction, especially those individuals considering a one-time-only custom home in unincorporated King County.
Workshop agenda
The workshop will begin with opening remarks from DDES Director Stephanie Warden followed by presentations on the following topics:
- Built Green program and incentives
- Electronic plan submittal and review
- Critical Area Designations
- Health Department review processes
- Historic preservation / cultural resource requirements
- Critical area flexibilities (farm plans / forest plans / stewardship).
Registration procedures
This workshop, offered free of charge, is now closed for registration. We appreciate the enthusiastic response we have had and we reached capacity sooner than expected.

- Electronic Plan Review (eReview)
DDES held information sessions in September 2006 to introduce eReview, a new process at DDES to accept plan submittals electronically, which began in October 2006 as a pilot project.

- Permit Center Roundtable 2006
On February 22, 2006, the DDES Permit Center hosted a Roundtable discussion with permit runners and builders to discuss permit intake procedures, permit application requirements, and other issues.
The meeting was very interactive and at the request of the attendees, presentation materials from the meeting have been made available online:

Permit center staff are working together to implement procedures to address many of the suggestions put forth at that meeting for improving processes, communication, and overall service. Suggestions involving other Department sections will be shared with appropriate staff. Due to the success of this event, we hope to continue this format with other sections in DDES.
