What is the purpose of a fire system permit?

Fire system permits help to preserve life and property by preventing and controlling fires and fire hazards with compliance to adopted Fire Codes and standards for fire and life safety.

What activities require a fire system permit?

Fire permit applications include:

  • Fire sprinkler systems
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Fire monitoring systems
  • All fixed fire extinguishing systems
  • Standpipe
  • Watermain extensions
  • Underground sprinkler supply lines
  • Fire hydrant installation
  • Flammable and combustible liquid storage tanks
  • LPG tanks
  • Generators
  • Flammable liquid spray booths
  • Flow coaters
  • Fiberglassing equipment
  • Solvent distillation equipment for recycling solvents
  • High piled storage.

How much will it cost?

Fees are assessed based on the type of permit. The fire system & tank permit fee sheet, available in PDF* (79KB) or fill-in Excel* (24KB) format, lists the fees charged for various permits.

When submitting a fire system permit application, include a check for the total projected fee based on the fee sheet. Make checks payable to the King County Office of Finance. Any fees not paid upon application will be due at time of issuance.

Where can I get an application?

The materials needed for a fire system permit application are listed below, or permit application packages are mailed upon request by calling DDES customer service at 206-296-6600.

For fire system permits

  • 3 sets of plans
  • 3 sets of cut sheets

For fire system tank permits**

  • 3 copies of a legible and engineered scaled site plan on letter/legal size paper, that shows the size and proposed location of the LPG tank, all parcel property lines, all buildings or structures on the parcel and streets, roads, alleys which abut the property.

**For aboveground residential LPG tanks under 2,000 gallons ONLY, permits will be issued as "subject to field inspection" approval. As of January 1, 2004, these permit fees are: $526.83 for tanks up to 500 gallons and $840.03 for 501 to 2,000 gallons. Please refer to Aboveground LPG Tank Permit instructions.

How do I submit my application?

The DDES permit center is responsible for the intake and issuance of fire permit applications.
