King County Executive Sims extends implementation of new greenhouse gas policy

In June, King County Executive Ron Sims announced that King County would be the first local government in the nation to add greenhouse gas pollution to the environmental review of construction projects. The review covers projects undergoing environmental review mandated by the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) and applies to the County's own developments and to projects where the County is the lead permitting agency. The new policy originally was scheduled to go into effect September 1st and explicitly calls out a project’s contributions to climate change as a harmful impact.

After receiving community input, this week, King County Executive Ron Sims announced he would extend implementation of this new policy by 45 days to October 15th to allow more time for the public and those affected to understand and prepare for the new requirements.

“This extension gives us an opportunity to continue to work with the affected communities to assist them in answering the questions,” said Executive Sims. “We are fortunate to live in a region that understands the serious implications of climate change and the need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. I applaud the business community for their support of our efforts to address this serious issue. King County has always been a leader in environmental protection and we are pleased that our strategies to reduce harmful air emissions have been embraced by citizens who enjoy our region’s beautiful landscape and who want to maintain it.”

Climate Change and SEPA Checklist

Beginning October 15, 2007, King County will be asking project proponents who must complete the SEPA checklist to discuss their emissions of greenhouse gases. In order to assist applicants, the Department has developed the following documents:
