Beat the heat

Community resources and cooling centers open around King County

King County, WA – With temperatures expected to be 15 to 20 degrees above normal this week in the low 90s, Public Health - Seattle & King County and the King County Office of Emergency Management are recommending residents make use of public facilities to stay cool during the heat.

Several cities (listed below) within King County have identified cooling facilities for residents to visit to stay cool and comfortable during hot summer days. Health officials also recommend using other public sites such as malls, community centers, libraries and other public buildings which have air-conditioning to find relief from the high temperatures.

In addition to working with local jurisdictions in King County, Public Health is working with community partners to ensure that the most vulnerable in our community get the information they need to protect themselves in this extreme weather.  Local long-term care and assisted living facilities in King County are being contacted, as are local homeless shelters and community based organizations serving seniors, alerting them to the health threat and providing guidance on how to support their clients.  Public Health also provided heat protection guidance in Spanish and Vietnamese to ethnic media in these communities.
