Record heat opens additional cooling centers
King County, WA – With record high temperatures expected around the Puget Sound region today, additional cooling centers are opening in many local jurisdictions around King County (see current list below) to help residents stay cool and comfortable during hot summer days. A cooling center is a place where residents can go to cool off, get some water, obtain information, and be referred to other services as needed. There are currently 12 centers in operation.
In additional to the centers listed below, all King County libraries have air-conditioning and are good places to escape the heat. See www.kcls.org (external link) for more information and locations.
Additionally, Public Health –Seattle & King County is working with community partners to ensure that the most vulnerable in our community get the information they need to protect themselves in this extreme weather. Local long-term care and assisted living facilities in King County are being contacted, as are local homeless shelters and community based organizations serving seniors, alerting them to the health threat and providing guidance on how to support their clients. Public Health also provided heat protection guidance in Spanish and Vietnamese to ethnic media in these communities.
