Staying healthy in the heat
Make use of cooling shelters and check in on children and vulnerable populations
King County, WA – As temperatures continue to rise throughout the afternoon, additional cooling centers are opening in many local jurisdictions around King County (see current list below, new or updated information in red) to help residents stay cool and comfortable during hot summer days. A cooling center is a place where residents can go to cool off, get some water, obtain information, and be referred to other services as needed.
Health officials also recommend checking on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the extreme heat.
Also, pay special attention to keep children safe in the heat:
1) Never leave a child (or a pet) in a parked car - temperatures can soar by 20 degrees within the first few minutes.
2) Water safety – never leave a child unattended near the water, and keep young children within the arms reach. Have infants and children wear a life jacket or vest when in or near open water.
3) Prevent tragic falls – If you open windows, be sure that they do not pose a fall risk. An open window attracts kids and though they might provide some welcome breeze, they also represent a real fall hazard to children.
Public Health - Seattle & King County has provided heat protection guidance in Spanish and Vietnamese to ethnic media in these communities. Additional resources for non-English speaking communities can be found at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) web site: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heat_guide.asp (external link).
