Legal Extern Program - Criminal Division
Purpose
The externship program is designed to give students a meaningful experience and exposure to our law practice. It is an excellent way to become acquainted with the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, pursue an interest in criminal law, and determine whether trial practice is a future career path.The extern positions are unpaid, but many law schools offer credit for externship programs.
Description of Program
Externs will be assigned to one or more deputies and assigned to a unit in the Criminal Division. Those units include the Special Drug Unit, which prosecutes crimes involving drug manufacturing, delivery, and possession; the Special Assault/Domestic Violence Unit, which prosecutes crimes against children, crimes involving sexual assault, and crimes against domestic partners; and the Trial Team Unit, which prosecutes "mainstream" felonies, such as burglary, robbery, and theft. Every effort will be made to accommodate an applicant's interest in a specific unit.
Duties may include witness contact, coordination and interviews; legal research and writing; and general preparation and support during trial. Externs must be able to work full time, 8:30 to 4:30 pm for a minimum of ten weeks.
Qualifications
A genuine interest in criminal law and procedure; basic legal and writing skills; and willingness to work under frequent deadlines in the fast paced environment of criminal litigation. All externs are required to complete an application and pass a criminal history check prior to working.
Summer externships are reserved for students between their first and second years of law school. Students in their second and third years of law school are eligible to apply for externships during the school year.
Consideration for Future Employment
Summer externs applying for our 2L summer intern program will be evaluated carefully by their supervising attorney. There is no guarantee that an externship will lead to a permanent position on staff.
Selection Process
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, list of three references, a 5-10 page writing sample, and an unofficial transcript to Becky Gifford, HR Manager, W554 King County Courthouse, 516 - 3rd Ave., Seattle, WA 98104 by February 9, 2009 for Summer 2009 externships.
Qualified candidates will be interviewed by an extern selection committee.
