Volunteer Protection Order Advocate - Job Description
Purpose of Position
To assist Protection Order Petitioners in obtaining temporary (ex-parte) and full year orders and to provide necessary emotional support and referrals to appropriate community resources.

Description of Daily Activities and Responsibilities
- To represent the Prosecutor's Office in a professional manner when advocating for a petitioner;
- To show respect to attorneys, judges, prosecutors, clerks, law enforcement officers, all legal professionals, co-workers, community advocates and clients
- To assist petitioners in completing the necessary paperwork for their ex-parte orders;
- To assist petitioners in understanding the protection order process
- To provide information and referrals to potential petitioners and community agencies;
- To accompany petitioners to the ex-parte hearing when necessary;
- To help prepare petitioners for the full order hearing;
- To provide follow-up support and information as needed to petitioners after the full year hearing;
- To share information and resources to petitioners when needed;
- To assist the Protection Order Program with necessary record keeping and statistics;
- To follow office policies and procedures;
- To complete all necessary paperwork;
- To empathize with the needs of the petitioner;
- To create a climate of trust, openness and acceptance and have the ability to comfort another person.
General Requirements
- Strong interest in providing service to victims of domestic violence;
- Completion of a 36 hour Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Training through the Volunteer Program of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office;
- No criminal law violations as evidenced through a criminal background check.
Time Requirements
Applicants should have an availability of a minimum of seven hours per week between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. We also ask for volunteers to make at least a six-month commitment to the program.
