King County Challenges Additional Voter Registrations
Statement to Media For Release: March 24, 2005
For Information Contact: Dan Donohoe: 206-296-9029

The King County Prosecutor’s Office announced today that King County is challenging the voter registrations of 93 more individuals who are believed to be ineligible to vote due to felony convictions.

The 93 names are a portion of the list of approximately 800 felon voters supplied by the Republican Party and more challenges from that list could follow. Prosecutors are still analyzing the remaining names on the Republican list and estimate it will be several weeks before the review is complete.

The new challenges are in addition to the ones announced on March 8 involving a list of 99 felon voters that was provided by the Seattle Times.

“This represents phase two of our ongoing efforts to remove the names of ineligible voters from the list that was referred to my office. We will continue this effort until all unqualified voters are removed from the list,” said King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng.

Under state law, a felon must complete a sentence, pay court-ordered restitution and receive a certificate of restoration of rights before being able to register to vote.

Letters are being sent today to the 93 individuals whose names were provided to prosecutors. The challenges will be reviewed in an administrative hearing on March 31 before King County Records and Elections and Licensing director Dean Logan. The administrative hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the King County Elections Office on the 5th floor of the King County Administration Building (room 553) in downtown Seattle.

Those individuals who receive a letter challenging their voter registration can respond by sending an affidavit refuting the challenge, attending the hearing or sending legal representation to the hearing to refute the challenge.

Prosecutors started with a list of 100 but narrowed it to 93 after it was determined that five people already had their voting rights cancelled, one was a repeat from the Seattle Times list and another person’s date of birth did not match the information on the list.
