King County was recently presented with the "Buy Recycled" Award of the US Conference of Mayors "Recycling at Work" campaign. This award was in recognition of the leadership that King County agencies have demonstrated, year after year, in environmental stewardship through purchasing. The award recognizes the accomplishments of the many agencies, reflected in the 1999 Annual Report of the Environmental Purchasing Program. ()
Congratulations to the leadership of all the agencies that helped King County win this prestigious national award.
King County Wins National Buy Recycled Award
The 7th Annual Recycling At Work Awards, of the US Conference of Mayors, honor the companies, organizations, universities, individuals, local, state, and federal government entities whose leadership makes recycling successful. Recycling at Work, a Campaign of the National Office Paper Recycling Project, is a collaborative effort of leaders in the public and private sector to establish an office-recycling ethic in America.
In announcing the ceremony, Conference Executive Director J. Thomas Cochran said, "The Awards Program for the Recycling at Work Campaign recognizes pioneers who have fulfilled a commitment to improving the environment in their communities. The winners of the award have provided us the roadmap, and made it easier for others to succeed."
A ceremony honoring King County and other winners was held in conjuction with the Municipal Waste Management Association (MWMA) Annual Meeting on March 13th, 2000 in Washington, D.C. The awards were presented by Fran McPoland, Federal Environmental Executive and the Honorable Michael Morrison, Mayor of Waco, Texas.
At the award ceremony, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and its affiliate, MWMA, released a "Best Practices Guide" detailing the success stories of the winners at the awards ceremony. The guide shares the case studies of these award winning programs and provides a road map for other cities to replicate them. Environmental Purchasing Program
The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.
The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.
These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
