Environmental Purchasing Bulletin #55:
Green Home Building

PLEASE NOTE:  These bulletins, published since 1997, are historical.  The content is not updated.

Introduction

Building "Green" is becoming increasingly important for developers, designers, builders and buyers. Although this is true throughout the country, it is especially true here in the Pacific Northwest, where we are trying to re-establish the populations of several regional Salmon runs that have been placed on the Federal Endangered Species list.

This bulletin describes local efforts by builders and governments to improve the sustainability of building practices in our community and contains links to regional websites with information about sustainable home-building.

Built Green

Yesterday (October 3rd, 2000), the Master Builders Association in partnership with King County and Snohomish County launched the Built Green program as a way to increase resource-efficient home construction in this region.

The program will educate builders about the environmentally friendly building techniques that are available and will educate consumers about the housing options available to them.

The builders association will certify Built Green homes on a three-star rating scale. Similar to programs already implemented around the country (see links below), developers will receive points for meeting certain environmental criteria. This includes five categories: green codes and regulations; on-site water quality; indoor-air quality; energy efficiency; and materials efficiency.

Visitors to the Built Green exhibit, sponsored by the King County Commission for Marketing Recyclable Materials, can meet participating builders and suppliers and see the variety of recycled construction, interior design, and landscaping products available.

The Commission will also be holding a drawing for a Homeowners Kit ($40 value), every two hours during the show.

Environmental Purchasing Program

The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.

The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.

These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
