Environmental Purchasing Bulletin #62:
More on Seattle Green Building

PLEASE NOTE:  These bulletins, published since 1997, are historical.  The content is not updated.

Introduction

In the last bulletin, we reported on the City's sustainable building policy. The City of Seattle has made a strong commitment to greening their new municipal construction projects, and they have recently adopted the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED™) standards. Read more about it in the last Environmental Purchasing Bulletin.

They have since accelerated their process and are contemplating requiring commercial builders to build green following LEED standards.

Building Industry Forum on City of Seattle Green Building Program

The Business and Industry Resource Venture of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Forum on April 25th. Read their invitation:

What would you think of the City requiring all new buildings to be constructed more sustainably? You may know that the Seattle City Council recently adopted a resolution asking for a proposal from staff for a Citywide Sustainable Building Program, sustainable building incentives and an evaluation of what requiring LEED for commercial building permits might mean. City of Seattle sustainable building staff want your ideas, thoughts and concerns about how they can meet the needs of the building industry and what sustainable building incentives YOU would like to see. Please plan to attend the following public forum to provide your input. Coffee and pastries provided. (This forum will not address the upcoming Energy Code revisions).

Environmental Purchasing Program

The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.

The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.

These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
