King County's Equipment Shop (ER&R) initiated a new program in March, 2002 to save money spent on heavy equipment air filters and at the same time substantially reduce the volume of used air filters being sent to the landfill. ER&R is having a Washington State company dry clean their air filters for re-use. According to Bob Toppen, Equipment Supervisor, they expect to "save $7000 in 2002 by using 'sonic-cleaned' filters and reduce the number of air filters sent to the landfill by more than 200."
Dry Cleaned Air Filters
The County's vendor, Filter Clean Services Inc., uses a "sonic" dry cleaning process, which uses only computerized controlled air, vacuum, vibration and rotation cycles - no chemicals. Each filter is given a bonded warranty to be as good or better than a new replacement filter. Buying these dry cleaned filters can save 45% on all types of industrial and engine filters.
This company has provided documentation of independent tests that conclude cleaned filters are more efficient at filtering than new ones. Contact them for more information.

Environmental Purchasing Program
The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.
The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.
These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
