Environmental Purchasing Bulletin #78:
Sustainable Washington

PLEASE NOTE:  These bulletins, published since 1997, are historical.  The content is not updated.

Introduction

Following is an announcement from the State of Washington's new, "Sustainable Washington" program.

Sustainable Washington

The Governor's Sustainable Washington Advisory Panel submitted its first report to Governor Locke in early February 2003. Titled "A New Path Forward: Action Plan for a Sustainable Washington, Achieving Long-term Economic, Social, and Environmental Vitality," the report identifies eight strategic outcomes for 2030 and includes eleven initial priority action recommendations. Several of these recommendations are already being acted upon through bills introduced to the legislature. The recommendations cover a wide subject area including investment in clean energy and addressing greenhouse gas emissions, new natural resource initiatives, adopting green building and green procurement standards, establishing sustainability performance measures, capital spending changes to encourage efficient development, business incentives and tax shifting. Creation of an Institute for Innovation and Sustainable Development is also proposed. Citizens, businesses, non-profits and governments are all encouraged to incorporate the recommendations into their own practices and organizational efforts. The report can be found at the Governor's website.

Environmental Purchasing Program

The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.

The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.

These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
