King County government agencies now have a new tool to prevent waste and reduce disposal costs. Thanks to the King County WasteWise Program, housed in the Solid Waste Division, and to Facilities Management and others for signing an agreement with the RE Store, a non-profit used building materials store in Seattle, to pick up reusable building materials that would otherwise go to the landfill, from King County internal construction, renovation and demolition projects.
Salvaged Building Materials Contract
In the past, certain materials that are not normally
handled by King County Surplus (an internal program) had to go into the
garbage because there was not an easy or cost-effective way to find a home for
them. Examples of these materials include: Doors, windows, stairway railings,
cedar sheeting, hardware fixtures, etc. Under this new agreement, Re Store
will salvage some of the these materials.
The RE Store is in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. It is operated by RE
Sources, a non-profit environmental education organization based in
Bellingham. Proceeds from the sale of materials at the RE Stores fund RE
Sources' environmental and community programs.
Last week, Metro Transit became the first County agency to use this new
agreement and both Transit and RE Store have reported that it went smoothly.
They were happy to find a home for things that were being stockpiled and/or
were too expensive to dismantle and recycle.
Attached is a copy of the contract (Memorandum of Agreement) for your information.
To legally protect both King County and the RE Store, this agreement is an official County contract, even though no money changes hands between parties. If you are a County employee and have used building materials from
King County internal construction, demolition or renovation projects and are ready to use this contract, please call Pat Finn, Seattle field manager for the RE Store, at (206) 423-4537.If you need more details about this contract, please contact Tom Watson or Kinley Deller in the King County Solid Waste Division, (contact information below).

Environmental Purchasing Program
The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.
The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.
These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
