Environmental Purchasing Bulletin #91:
King County Environmental Purchasing 2004 Annual Report

PLEASE NOTE:  These bulletins, published since 1997, are historical.  The content is not updated.

Introduction

Today's bulletin features the King County Environmental Purchasing Program 2004 Annual Report, which details recycled and other environmentally preferable purchases by County agencies for the past year and a half (July 1, 2003, through December 31, 2004). During this time period, King County agencies purchased 17.7 million dollars worth of recycled and environmentally preferable products, including newly purchased items such as biodiesel, hybrid buses and SUV's. In addition to again increasing King County's level of support of markets for these materials, these purchases also brought $950,000 in savings to County agencies.

For another year, King County has been a strong leader on behalf of the environment, as County employees, vendors, and our partners in other jurisdictions have braved the challenges of change and have brought King County to yet another new high in levels of environmentally responsible purchasing. By your efforts, you are providing a roadmap for others struggling with the same core questions: "What do we mean, green?" and "How do we get there from here?"

This year's program annual report includes accomplishments we never dreamed of, and we can only marvel at the ingenuity and dedication the many participants in our program. Thank you all, very much. We will continue to keep you informed of new developments throughout the year and hope you will be in touch when your agency becomes involved in initiatives that benefit our environment.

Environmental Purchasing Program

The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.

The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.

These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
