Introduction

Congratulations and another big "Thank You" for your support of the King County Environmental Purchasing program. Your participation has made King County the nation’s leader in environmentally responsible purchasing, and today we have great news.

The October edition of Government Procurement Magazine features the outstanding progress of King County employees in developing ways to use environmentally preferable products. Municipalities and other organizations throughout the nation are recognizing that they can make a difference by purchasing environmentally responsible products and are finding leadership in this confusing area in the examples set by King County agencies.

Green Purchasing - Leading by Example

Today, in its October, 2005 issue, Government Procurement Magazine published an article featuring the King County Environmental Purchasing Program, entitled "Green Purchasing - Leading by Example."

An excerpt from the article follows, and sets the tone for the article:

The King County green purchasing program is effective because support for the effort exists throughout all levels of the county government. Ron Sims, the King County Executive, frequently references the county’s green purchasing efforts as an important indicator of the county’s progressive, yet fiscally conservative approach to government. “It’s our role to be good stewards of the county’s limited resources,” he explained, “and that means being conservative with how we use the public’s tax money, how we use the public’s trees, and how we use the public’s clean air, water, and other natural resources.”

Sims sees the county’s green purchasing program as a way to “minimize resource use while maximizing the county’s ability to buy smartly.” According to him, green purchasing is “a good investment in the future and a great investment in the present.”

Environmental Purchasing Program

The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.

The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.

These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
