King County Executive Ron Sims announced over the weekend an ambitious goal of increasing the county's use of biodiesel from the current 5 percent (B5) mixture to a 20 percent (B20) mixture - an increase that is intended to cut pollution, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and encourage growth in the domestic clean-fuel industry.
King County has been a leader in the purchase of environmentally preferable materials and development of their markets. King County's use of biodiesel significantly increases markets for this clean burning alternative to fossil fuel to produce lasting environmental benefits for this region. The use of biodiesel adds to the county's current use of other environmentally preferable transportation products, such as hybrid buses and cars, electric coaches, ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and re-refined oil.
King County Will Quadruple Biodiesel Use
King County Executive Ron Sims issued a press release and executive order on Global Warming Awareness. This Order requires and empowers King County Departments to employ increasingly aggressive strategies to mitigate regional contribution to global warming, including setting a goal of increasing the amount of biodiesel used in all County diesel vehicles to 20%.

Environmental Purchasing Program
The King County Environmental Purchasing Program assists County agencies in implementation of King County Executive Policy CON-7-1-2, which requires agencies to use recycled and other environmentally preferable products wherever practicable.
The program assembles information about these products and makes it available to specific agency users who can evaluate them and develop applications in County projects.
These environmental purchasing bulletins contain information about the results of product evaluations and other accomplishments of County agencies. We hope this information will help you find ways to use recycled materials in the work of your agency and that you will contact us if we can help you with further information or if you have suggestions.
