About the Historical Records Guide

The online Historical Records Guide contains finding aids to the collections held by the King County Archives. Finding aids may range in detail from item level inventories to more general descriptions of the types of records contained in a series. The finding aids in this guide generally include three components:

A record group is the unique identifier established by the King County Archives to correspond to the King County agency or department that originally created the described records. Each record group, in turn, has its own set of record series. Each record series represents a discrete set of materials that has been arranged according to the creating agency's original method of filing, collecting, or using those materials. A container list for a record series provides specific information about the contents of that record series at the box, folder, item, or other appropriate level.

This online guide to the historical records of King County is an ongoing project. Please check back frequently to see what new finding aids have been added. Please note that this online version of the guide includes information only about those records held at the King County Archives facility. Information about other material that was acquired and processed before 1996 may be found in the print edition of the Historical Records Guide. This earlier guide lists King County historical records held by both the King County Archives and the Puget Sound Regional Branch, Washington State Archives. Copies of this volume are available at several branches of the King County Library and at the downtown Central Library of the Seattle Public Library. For further information about the collections listed, or if you have questions about King County historical records, please contact the Archives.
