Garbage Truck Dumping Trash, 1920s
The shift to motorized collection vehicles finally took place in late 1925. Health Commissioner, E. T. Hanley, was quick to boast of the efficiency of this new method of garbage collection: "I know of no other equipment for garbage service that compares with an especially equipped 5-ton auto truck, such as we are now using. The use of trucks, as compared with wagons reduces the number of units about 67%. That fact alone reduces complaints." (Photo ID: 90.2.0847) |
