What Coverage Costs
Because you're a benefit-eligible part-time or full-time employee (including full-time Local 587 employees) or a benefit-eligible employee in a provisional or term-limited temporary position (your hiring authority can tell you if your position is benefit-eligible), the county pays the entire premium for medical, dental and vision coverage for you and the eligible dependents you enroll.
However, you pay a benefit access fee of $35 a month to cover your spouse/domestic partner when he/she has access to medical coverage through:
  • his/her own employer;
  • a union trust paid by an employer; or
  • the military while in active duty status.
You don't pay this fee if:
  • your covered spouse/domestic partner is unemployed, a King County employee or covered under Medicare, Medicaid, retiree medical, COBRA or disability (whether Social Security or military); or
  • your covered spouse/domestic partner has coverage because he/she is a veteran or retired from the military or has private coverage, Canadian coverage or other foreign government-supported coverage.
